Delta Corporation Limited in Partnership with The BOOST Fellowship hosted the 2016 edition of the Delta Ethics and Social Responsibility Initiative Competitions for tertiary institutions on the 7th of October in Harare. This year the competition ran under the theme, Above the Influence – Campaign against alcohol abuse.
Delta Corporation, runs a sustainable development thrust that emphasises that the company exists because of its synergistic relation with its consumers. This strategy under Prosper platform sub-category of a Sociable World, is aimed at activating on responsible alcohol consumption so that alcohol is consumed and enjoyed in a responsible manner.

In the Delta Ethics and Social Responsibility programme this year, tertiary students who are part of BOOST teams undertook community projects that promoted responsible alcohol consumption which culminated in a competition. Eleven teams from tertiary institutions participated in various community projects and campaigns against various forms of alcohol abuse. Nine teams presented their projects before a diverse panel of judges representing various sectors in government, civil service, media and private sector.

The participating teams were from Africa University, Bindura University of Science Education, Catholic University in Zimbabwe, Great Zimbabwe University, Harare Institute of Technology, Midlands State University, National University of Science and Technology, Women’s University in Africa and University of Zimbabwe.

The Delta Ethics and Social Responsibility Initiative has two objectives. The main objective is to give students an understanding that the long-term success and prosperity of a market economy, businesses and individuals are dependent on the ability to influence positive social change. In this year’s edition the objective of the programme was to raise awareness on the negative effects of alcohol abuse with an aim to eliminate the harmful impact of irresponsible consumption of alcohol. Teams campaigns focused on drinking and driving; underage drinking; illicit alcohol and binge drinking; alcohol and pregnancy and alcohol and violence.

Teams had intriguing, innovative and ingeniously creative campaigns which made the competition very exciting and unpredictable. Nearly 450 students, academic and business leaders were present to witness this phenomenal exposition. Mrs. Dorcas Sithole, who is the Deputy Director for Mental Health Services and Substance abuse from the Ministry of Health and Child Care, was the guest of honor for the day.

From the participating teams, the championship title was awarded to University of Zimbabwe while  National University of Science and Technology, Midlands State University and Harare Institute of Technology, scooped second, third and fourth places respectively. Thematic social media awards were won by University of Zimbabwe and Midlands State University. All participating teams received complimentary prizes of laptop speakers meant to support their team inventory.
